What is balloon sinuplasty?
Meadows Health Ear, Nose and Throat utilizes the NuVentTM EM Sinus Dilation System to perform balloon sinuplasty. NuVent is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to open blocked sinus pathways.
When is balloon sinuplasty recommended?
This technique may be used on patients suffering from chronic sinusitis, for whom medications and other less invasive treatments have not worked.
What is the procedure for balloon sinuplasty?
First, a Meadows Health ENT specialist will perform a CT scan of your sinuses. You and the provider will together determine whether to use general anesthesia or local anesthesia, and whether to perform the procedure in office or in an operating room. In the procedure, the surgeon inserts the NuVent balloon into the blocked sinus pathway. An Image Guidance System (IGS) guides the surgeon and confirms correct balloon placement. The balloon is inflated then deflated.
What are the results of balloon sinuplasty?
After the procedure, the patient may be prescribed pain medication, as well as medications and irrigations to help ease pain and swelling. Patients generally recover from balloon sinuplasty within a couple of days, and experience long-lasting relief from the sinus conditions treated.
